Norma Kamali Embraces AI to Transform the Future of Fashion
A Visionary Designer’s Innovative Approach
Norma Kamali has fifty years in fashion. She now brings AI to her work. AI works with her like a creative friend. Her designs come from the past and speak for the future.
Kamali began her AI work after a meeting in Abu Dhabi. Experts spoke of an AI tool built on her work, with hints from her Walmart collection. At first, she felt doubt. Soon, her doubt turned into hope. She chose an AI model to add to her 57‐year archive. She said, "AI can be my Karl Lagerfeld."
A Commitment to Education and Learning
Kamali wanted to learn more about AI. She joined an online course at MIT Professional Education in 2023. The course gave her a clear look at AI in art. She said, "I did not know how far I could go." Her fears about tech soon became excitement. She learned to write prompts, work with training data, and test her AI model from Maison Meta.
AI: A Creative Collaborator
Kamali’s tests with AI bring fresh art. She blends known styles with new tech. AI helps her shape classic designs. For example, she rethinks black garments with silver studs. She even finds fun in odd AI outputs. "It was magic," she said. "Some of the best work can be odd."
Addressing Industry Challenges and Sustainability
Kamali also thinks about how AI will affect fashion and the planet. She cares that clothes leave less waste on the earth. She sees a way for AI to pick fabrics and cut waste. One day, you might design your wedding dress online, and a robot will build it piece by piece.
She knows that tech may change jobs in fashion. Fewer will sew as before. Designers will need new tools to work well. "Sewing skill is rare. Designers need new ways to work," she said.
A Continual Exploration of AI
In the MIT program, Kamali talked with peers and Abel Sanchez. Their talks pushed her deeper into AI work. "AI moves so fast; I must return to learn," she said. Her study in AI is only the start of a long path.
Kamali asks others to work with AI. She compares it to entering an unknown world without a shared language. "The train is moving; we must ride it," she says. Her words call for more learning in work and life.
The Future is Collaborative
Kamali now shows AI designs with her usual styles on her website. Her work proves that tech and art can work side by side. She moves art and fashion forward with care. "Learning is life; why stop now?" her work with AI marks a new moment in fashion.
