Growing Sustainable Fashion in Indonesia: Bridging Challenges and Innovations

Jakarta, VIVA – March 4, 2025 – Indonesia’s fashion sector grows fast. It now stands as one of Southeast Asia’s quickest fields. Yet, growth brings clear problems for nature. Many mass-market clothes depend on polyester. This fabric uses much water, many chemicals, and high energy. It stays in nature for a long time.

A Shift Towards Sustainable Fashion

Trends abroad show rising care for green fashion. In Indonesia, few now follow such care. Malik Thariani, Co-Founder and Director of TONIQUE, points to polyester’s harsh cost to nature. "We use polyester because it costs less. Still, this choice harms our land. We want to show that green fashion can cost less," Thariani said on March 4, 2025. TONIQUE uses AI in design and graphics. The tech makes clothes patterns, forms samples, and handles fabrics. With these new steps, the brand seeks fixes that lower waste and speed work.

Eco-Friendly Innovations

Thariani hopes green fashion fits all people. "We work to break the idea that green goods suit only some. At TONIQUE, we give stylish, cost-friendly clothes that care for nature," he said.

The brand picks cotton for its products. Cotton saves up to 2,000 liters of water each cycle instead of polyester. This cut shows the brand’s deep care for nature.

Addressing Gaps in the Industry

Smejo Chacko, TONIQUE’s Commissioner, sees low care in Indonesia for green ways. "Here, focus on green clothes is not as strong as in Europe. We think change can start now. We want the industry to know that making green goods is possible and can cost less," Chacko said.

Upcoming Initiatives for Environmental Impact

TONIQUE will start the "One Tree Per Order" plan in March 2025. For each order, the brand plants a tree. This plan shows their care for our land.

As Indonesia’s fashion moves ahead, plans like TONIQUE’s shed light on a future that cares for our home. With new tech and green materials, the brand sets a path for its industry to do well while caring for the environment. Ongoing work builds a community that values green choices and may spark a wider move for care in fashion here and beyond.
