Revolutionizing Retail: How Walmart's New AI Tool Cuts Fashion Lead Time by 18 Weeks

Walmart Transforms Fashion Production with New AI Tool

April 11, 2025 – By Hannah Abdulla

Walmart takes a big step in retail. The company now uses an AI tool that cuts design time by up to 18 weeks. This tool, called Trend-to-Product, uses AI and generative AI. It speeds up both design and production tasks.

Streamlining the Design Process

In the past, a fashion collection took about six months to create. Designers searched for trends on the internet, in shows, and on social media. They gathered ideas slowly and with care.

Trend-to-Product clears this work. The tool links small bits of global data on current styles. The Walmart Fashion team sees these links and makes fast, smart choices.

Functionality of Trend-to-Product

The tool builds mood boards in minutes. It lists names, color sets, textures, and more on each board. Designers then add their own view and sales data. After that, the tool writes a clear tech guide for suppliers. This guide tells them how to produce the items. In about one hour, the work flows from idea to final design. Walmart sees new collections on shelves and online in six to eight weeks.

Impact on Walmart’s Fashion Division

The new tool cuts the work time by about 18 weeks. "From start to finish, our process now saves 18 weeks," said Jen Jackson Brown, Senior Vice President for Apparel Brand and Design at Walmart. She added that the team now works more on ideas than on finding trends.

Andrea Albright, Executive Vice President of Sourcing, sees a wider use for the tool. "Our tool brings the best of AI to many products," she said. Soon, it may help shape items in other groups like cosmetics and food.

A Step Forward for Retail Technology

Trend-to-Product changes the way Walmart works. It helps the company bring new items to buyers fast while keeping quality and low costs. Early signs excite the team and its partners. Walmart shows that big stores can use AI to meet the needs of shoppers and work with speed.
